Scientific Atlanta Webstar 2203c - how to access locked pages

By borfast

UPDATE Aug 30 2010: you may also be interested in my Arris password of the day generator.

In my new house, my ISP (Cabovisão) installed a new cable modem, a Scientific Atlanta Webstar 2203c.

It's a stupid modem. Really stupid. If I unplug the ethernet cable (or the USB cable, which I don't use) and plug it into another computer, the modem has to be reset so it can adapt to the new hardware - these were the words from the tech support guy, not mine.

Anyway, I thought that it might have something for me to play with, so I tried to find out how to access the modem.

It is accessible via SNMP and also has a web interface, which doesn't allow for anything else other than getting some (a lot, actually) information and performing some line tests - at least as far as Ive discovered.

The web interface can be accessed via http://192.168.100.1 but most pages are locked and the user is presented with the unfriendly message "This feature has not been enabled in your cable modem". Unacceptable, of course! :)
A quick Google search for "webstar "feature is not enabled" revealed a post in cable-modem.net that contains the answer.

We can set the access level for that page via this web page:
http://192.168.100.1/_aslvl.asp

The login information is the following:
Username: admin
Password: W2402

We can set the AccessLevel to 2, enter the username and password again, as instructed on that forum post, and there it is, access to all pages, except the "Advanced" tab. To access the "Advanced" tab and all the information hidden beneath it, set the AccessLevel to 3 instead of 2 and there you go.

One interesting thing is that this is not a "normal" cable modem. This is an EMTA, which is basically a cable modem and a VoIP terminal in a single box. I also noticed references to host names containing "voip" in their names, all over the place under the "Advanced" section of the web interface. Maybe this varies depending on the ISP the modem is being used with but I find it interesting that my ISP may be using VoIP for their clients. I didn't know they were going that way. Let's see how it goes!

Finally, I should point out that this username and password combination should also work for other Scientific Atlanta models, namely:

  • WebSTAR DPC2100
  • WebSTAR DPC2100R2
  • WebSTAR DPC2203
  • WebSTAR DPC2320
  • WebSTAR DPR2325R3
  • WebSTAR DPX2100
  • WebSTAR EPC2100
  • WebSTAR EPC2100R2
  • WebSTAR EPC2203
  • WebSTAR EPC2505
  • WebSTAR EPR2320R2
  • WebSTAR EPR2325R3

Mac, sorry, I have no idea of what could be wrong. Perhaps it's a different version of the firmware and it behaves differently.

I assume you tried getting into the locked pages in the "Advanced" tab and still got blocked. If not, give it a try; maybe the access codes were accepted and you can get in.

I also have noticed that after I enter the password I have a time limit to acces the hidden pages.

Hello Wizho.

Yes, there is a time limit after entering the password but I find it more than enough for me to play around with everything I want. How long does the session of your modem lasts? Perhaps it's due to being different models? (mine is a DPC2203)

As for the access levels, I have no idea what could be wrong but again, I would say that this is beucase our modems are different models.

WebSTAR DPX2100

Hey, great info! This works great on the DPX2100 however this model has only level 0, 1 and 2. That said, it provides all the intel that I needed in order to confirm that Comcast was at fault in regards to a down internet connection which they then took care of. It is always great when you can teach their "support" people a thing or two! I was trying to access that modem for some time but never had the code! Excellent post!

borfast yea i think

borfast i think thtats it but somehow page comes up blank .. probably the access level wasnt set correctly. its probably because the original page to set the access levels has only three options, acces level 0, 1, and 2 .. there is no option for access level 3. What i tried to do was create a page to hold form in html . and submit the form access level 3 option selected in that html form i have created. Which sends the variables to the original form. Well apparently it didnt work. So i guess my modem also is one of those shi**y ones.. Well its just my luck i guess. thanks for ur reply

SA 2203c modem & Linksys Ethernet/ DSL Router...

for the life of me I cant get the 2 to talk to eachother.....
Computer says both are connected fine, but when I try to go from Modem to router
it tells me the "Line is disconnected" any thoughts?

First, the obvious: check

First, the obvious: check your cables. Maybe one of them is broken somewhere. Easy enough to solve. :)

Then, if it's not a cable problem, try connecting the modem to another router (or the router to another modem) and see if it works; if it does, it's likely you have some compatibility problem between your modem and router. In this case, you'll probably need to change one of the devices.

Other than these two options, I can't think of anything else, right now.

IP address goes to my wireless router

when I use the IP address 192.168.100.1, it takes me to the Dlink wireless router I have set up, not to my cable modem. I don't get why they would have the same IP address. I have a scientific atlanta PCX 2500. Do you know how I can access the cable modem when there is also a wireless router in series?

By borfast
5 years 22 weeks ago

They probably don't have the

They probably don't have the same IP address, that would cripple the network. But let's entertain the idea for a moment.

If you have your computer connected to the router and the router to the modem, then it will obviously see the router first.

The first obvious solution is to connect your computer directly to the modem but doing it every time you want to access the modem is too much work for such a purpose - not to mention the added security risk of having your computer connected directly to the internet.

So that leaves the second obvious solution, which is to change the IP address of one of the devices. The modem probably doesn't let you do this but the router should allow it.

But there's another hypothesis: your modem uses a different IP address than the one I present here. In that case, finding out your modem's IP address is as simple as inspecting your router's settings and seing what's the default/primary gateway it is using.

Either solution should work but I'd go for the second one, so that I could make sure both devices had a unique IP address.

Hope this helps.
Good luck and let me know what you find out.

Yes, it is true, it "locks"

Yes, it is true, it "locks" itself to the hardware it connects to and if you want to connect it to another device you have to reset it.

I first used it connected directly to my laptop when I moved to my new home, before bringing in the rest of the stuff. When my desktop arrived, I connected the modem to the router and it didn't work - but it still worked if I connected it to the laptop.

I wasted a couple of hours until I figured that out, because the product manual my ISP gave me didn't mention this "feature".

And there's one more thing that bothers me: the damn battery! If I want to restart my router (or any other home network device I have ever used, for that matter), I simply unplug the power cord and plug it back in. Since this modem has a battery, I have to unplug it from the wall socket, open the bottom compartment and remove the battery. It's not really bad but it's annoying.

for some reason the username and password work when the pop up box comes up. but then after i press submit on the webform i get the following error message. "Error converting one or more entries:

return to Main page."
i tried copying both the username and password from here and pasting, but no use. and i even tried entering the password only, and i still get the same error message. any idea what could be causing this, i even tried both browsers IE and FF. i have optimum/cablevision in New York if that matters.

Sorry, I'm not really sure what could be the reason for the problem.

Are you sure you're not copying any whitespaces from this page?

Is your modem the same model and version as mine, or the same as other people described here in the comments?

Perhaps it's a newer version and the username and password don't work anymore.

Password Confirmation Failure too

I'm also Cablevision of Long Island, I have the same behavior that you do.. I guess they locked out the ability to see the status page.. how silly.. Their techs are so misinformed as it is, it only helps us to have more information so we can troubleshoot problems.. I've been waiting weeks to troubleshoot issues with my service and multiple service calls, escalation, PSC threats, executive hotline escalations get me nowhere.. Gotta love the evil dolan empire..

Setting the security level

I think you have to use the security page to set the level of security. Then when you go to the normal stats page (http://192.168.100.1/) it will show you more information.

Not very intuitive but I think that's all there is too it. After I entered the password, nothing happened but when I went to the stats page it would then show more information.

Stupid Modem?

My opinion of most "tech support" guys isn't too high to begin with, but that being said, I have noticed this behavior with all cable modems my local cable company has provided, including modems by Scientific Atlanta, Terayon, Motorola, and Arris. This was also the behavior of a D-Link cable modem not provided by my provider.
If your tech support guy was right in that the webstar is a "stupid" modem, then it seems the majority of cable modems on the market are stupid as well.

By borfast

Actually, I'm the one who

Actually, I'm the one who said it was stupid, the tech support guy only said that the modem needed to be reset so that it could adapt to the new hardware.

But the fact that most(?) modems on the market have this behavior doesn't mean it isn't stupid. The quantity of some behavior doesn't determine it's quality. For example, there are millions of people who smoke...

Why you have to reset your cable modem

Hi there, the cable modem is capable of recognizing many devices. The reason your ISP's tech told you to reset it is because they probably have your cablemodem config profile set to a 1 CPE (customer premise device) limit. You have to power-cycle the cablemodem to clear its cache, so you can connect a device with a different MAC address.

In other words, this limit comes from your ISP, not the cablemodem.

Hey, thanks for the tips... but I'm still having a problem.
